French
Emmanuelle El-Maawiy is a native speaker who grew up South of Paris, in Versailles, France. She studied International Law in Paris (Masters, Pantheon-Sorbonne) and Air and Space Law in Montreal (Masters, McGill University). She has been teaching French in London for over 10 years following an initial career in the Insurance industry. Mrs El-Maawiy has worked as a Teaching Assistant and French Teacher at Hobbayne Primary School, in West London, for 4 years before joining Wetherby School in 2009. She also teaches French at Chepstow House. She has four children, all bilingual.
At Wetherby school, we follow the "La Jolie Ronde" scheme of work. The activity book "Les aventures de Minou et Trottine et les saisons" is used with year 1 and 2, supported by matching interactive whiteboard activities. In year 3 we use the "Tout le Monde" scheme, an online interactive programme supported by worksheets and self assessment statements.
The purpose of introducing French in the curriculum in early years and in KS1 is to familiarise the children with understanding and speaking a modern foreign language. All year groups are taught French by a native speaker once a week for a half hour and by the end of year 3 the boys will be able:
- To count up to 40
- To respond to simple classroom commands
- To greet someone
- To answer to simple questions about themselves
- To ask politely and thank someone
-To name colours in French
- To say the days of the week
- To spell their name and be familiar with the alphabet in French
- To remember 80 to 100 words
- To name the capital of France
