Learning Support
Jane Miller trained initially as a speech and language therapist in London. She worked for many years in the National Health Service, working mainly with children in a wide variety of health centres, clinics and special schools. In 1996 she completed a post graduate specialist teaching diploma at the Dyslexia Institute in London. She left the Health Service and joined Wetherby in Sept1997 as part of the Learning support team. She became Learning Support Coordinator in Sept 2008. Jane's husband teaches at St Paul's Boys' School . In 1992 he was asked to run one of the boarding house and they and their three children lived happily on the school site for twelve years.
Julie Warnock graduated with a BA from the University of Washington in Seattle where she read music. She was a professional cellist for some years, working in the US and then in the UK. In 1993 she took a career break, bringing up her three children and beginning training in special needs education.
Julie completed both the Hornsby Dyslexia and the Study Skills Diploma courses, special needs courses in Maths with Dorian Yeo and Mahesh Sharma, and the Visual Perceptual Skills course with Tamara Nathan. Julie taught English and Maths at Emerson House from 1994 to 1998 before joining the SEN team at Wetherby in 1998. She teaches Maths and Visual Perceptual skills at Wetherby while continuing to teach English and Handwriting privately.
Wetherby is a non – testing school. We have a community of boys who are of varying skill and ability. Some boys require additional support; we have a committed learning support team consisting of: the Principal, the school SENCO, literary specialist, handwriting and reading specialist, Maths and Visual Perception, Speech and Language, physio and occupational therapy consultants. All staff at Wetherby are fully involved with any IEP’s children have and support is given both within the classroom via differentiated learning programmes and through one- to one support as appropriate.
Wetherby is proud of the learning support it provides. This area is also relevant to children who are on the Gifted and Talented programme and the school has a designated co-ordinator for the Gifted and Talented and Learning Enrichment programme with the school.
