Music & Choir
Colin Lochhead started at Wetherby in 2002 as Director of Music. He studied Music Education at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and went on to complete a PGCE at Jordanhill College of Education, Glasgow. Prior to his appointment at Wetherby he was Assistant Director of Music at King's College School, Cambridge and Director of Music at Christchurch Cathedral School, Oxford.
Music is important at Wetherby school and this is evident in many ways. All boys have weekly class lessons with a specialist teacher in which they sing, play percussion instruments, compose and listen to music. There is an interactive whiteboard to enhance the learning about instruments and composers and the boys enjoy working with a variety of software.
In school we feature a ‘Composer of the Week’ and the boys hear this music in assembly, in the entrance hall and also discuss information about the composer and the pieces in class music lessons.
We have six visiting instrumental teachers and individual lessons are available from Year 1 in guitar, piano, violin or cello. Each term there is an instrumental concert, held in St. Matthew’s Church, which gives these boys an important opportunity to perform. We also have three choirs in the school for which the boys are regularly auditioned from Year 1. When chosen for a choir boys have weekly practices and the choirs perform at major school events throughout the year including the Christmas Carol Concert, a spring term choir concert and the end of year Prize Giving service.
