Joanna James has taught at Wetherby since 2008. Having gained A-Levels in English, History and French, she graduated from Exeter University with a BA (Hons) in Classics, followed by a PGCE in Primary English, also at Exeter. Joanna's previous experience ranges from teaching in all year groups 1-6, including posts in London, France and at York Independent School in Toronto, Canada. She thoroughly enjoys teaching year 2 and 7+ and she loves to use her knowledge of Latin to teach the boys elementary etymology!
Sarah Worrall began teaching at Wetherby and Wetherby Preparatory School in January 2008. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree (English, Sociology, Journalism and German) and a Bachelor of Teaching (Middle School) both from the University of Tasmania. She began her teaching career in Tasmania, Australia. Her background in teaching English is extensive including having taught ESL in Thailand.
At Wetherby we endeavor to provide learning experiences which will enable each child to develop a true passion for English language and literature.
By the end of Year Three, pupils will have built upon their skills in five key areas; creative writing, grammar, reading, comprehension and speaking and listening. Our aim is to make boys think creatively though fun and inspiring lessons in which they are exposed to a variety of different literary styles. Our lessons accommodate for different learning styles which helps to foster development in all areas of the English curriculum.

The boys will experience a wide range of reading materials from our extensive reading schemes. A teacher hears each boy read at least four times a week and reading books are sent home daily for additional reading aloud. We have a well stocked library with a range of books for all abilities and interests.
The boys are involved in World Book Day where they get the opportunity to dress up as a favourite character from a book. We have an annual Poetry Day which involves a visiting poet and a poetry recital competition. We also participate in a variety of national competitions for poetry and short stories.
