Finton House Football Tournament

Finton House Football Tournament

On Friday 16th March the Year Two Dragons participated in the Finton House football tournament. The team line up for the day consisted of Moritz in goal, Oscar and Max for defence, Carlos and Captain Dylan in midfield and Tancredi “THE TANC” up front. The first game in the group stage saw the Wetherby attack make a hesitant start, however the Wetherby defence was incredibly organised.  Two goals from Dylan secured the first 3 points against Willington Prep. Group game 2 saw Wetherby defeat Parsons Green Prep 2 – 0 with Dylan and Tancredi scoring the goals. Final group game was against local side Broomwood Hall where Wetherby really came to life winning 4 – 0 as Tancredi and Dylan both scored two goals each. Wetherby marched on the Quarter-Finals yet to concede a goal thanks to the fantastic defence of Max and Oscar with the safe hands of Moritz behind them.

At the Quarter-Finals, Wetherby were full of excitement and determined not to leave empty handed against Hurlingham who had defeated Wetherby at the Prospect House tournament earlier this term. Carlos placed the ball down for a corner kick and he decided to not only cross the ball but it to cross it into the back of the net, it was an amazing goal. Minutes later, Dylan quickly grabbed the ball to take an enormous throw-in, perfectly placing it next to Carlos’ right foot who again scored into the roof of the net. Semi-Finals here we come!

Hornsby House were the next obstacle in our way and they were a very good footballing side. The defence stayed solid which resulted in a few opportunities to attack on the break. Tancredi opened the scoring with a brilliant strike. Moments later a free kick was awarded to Wetherby which Dylan “Gareth Bale” struck into the top corner. The Wetherby support went wild as Dylan celebrated with a slide on his knees into the crowd. Wetherby are in the final!

Throughout the school year Wetherby had lost twice to the Falcons and it was written in the stars that they were our opponents in the Final. Mr Gibb and Miss Shaw were two nervous wrecks on the side-line but had to appear cool and calm for the boys who had not shown a single sign of nerves throughout the tournament. Within the first 3 minutes Wetherby found the net as Tancredi ‘The Tanc’ powered his way past defenders to tap in the ball on the line. Literally a minute later, that man Tancredi again took the ball past two boys and sent a rocket of a shot into the back of the net. Wetherby had 5 minutes to go and a 2 – 0 lead. The whole team ran and ran making sure Falcons would not score. Hard work, determination and organisation throughout the tournament had paid off, Wetherby were champions. The boys played six games, scored 14 goals, conceded 0 goals – champions from start to finish.
