This week saw our much-anticipated Carol Concert, in the beautiful setting of St. James’ Church, Sussex Gardens. This event is always one of the most joyous musical collaborations of the year, and this year’s was no exception. The concert opened with a rousing performance of John Joubert’s Torches, as the Year 3 choir processed in by candlelight. All four of the school’s choirs sang at the concert, and these, as well as year the individual groups offered us music in a wide range of different styles, ranging from a 16th century carol from the Latin Piae Cantiones to the theme song to the film Home Alone, by John Williams. The boys further demonstrated their linguistic skills in Spanish and French traditional carols, which were deftly performed. The proceedings were concluded by the ever-popular West Country wassailing song, We Wish You a Merry Christmas which was sung by all the boys present, crowning the festive cheer of the occasion. All the boys who performed, did so with a calm and confident composure. Particular plaudits should go to our readers, many of whom read their own pieces of creative writing. Our thanks and congratulations indeed go to all the boys who took part.
